What makes you vulnerable makes you beautiful

My friend Lisa Chick suggested this Brene Brown Ted Talk to me, which was recommended to her by Melinda Gates.  I think it’s one of the most brilliant insights I’ve come across in a while (even though I’m inclined to be suspicious of the theater of Ted Talks, at least until they call me up on the stage . . .).

What if we all embraced our vulnerability?

Like the fact that I told a vageuly inapproriate JOKE at a business meeting at the glamorous Soho House today.  I haven’t told a joke since . . . ever, actually.  I know my kids are TERRIBLE at telling jokes, and now I see that they come by that trait naturally.  Instead of beating myself up about how idiotic I am, what if I was kind to myself about being human and was open to the possibility that stronger connections happen when people can see the real, unpolished, bad-joke telling you?  Because I loved the gals I met.  It’s such a rush to do business with smart women.

Anyway, here’s an excerpt from the Ted Talk.  If you do one thing today, watch this Ted Talk!

to let ourselves be seen, deeply seen, vulnerably seen; to love with our whole hearts, even though there’s no guarantee. . . to practice gratitude and joy in those moments of terror, when we’re wondering, “Can I love you this much? Can I believe in this this passionately? Can I be this fierce about this?”just to be able to stop and, instead of catastrophizing what might happen,to say, “I’m just so grateful, because to feel this vulnerable means I’m alive.” And the last, which I is probably the most important, think is to believe that we’re enough. Because when we work from a place,I believe, that says, “I’m enough,”then we stop screaming and start listening, we’re kinder and gentler to the people around us, and we’re kinder and gentler to ourselves.

Tuesday Tip: How to Hairspray

Tuesday Tip: How to Hairspray

Tuesday Tip:  The biggest mistake women make in using hairspray is hairspraying all over in one fell swoop.  The trick to keeping your hair in place but not having it look like a helmet is to hairspray in sections.  Two to three sections each for bangs (front) each side, and back.  Hair will LOOK like it has movement, because it moves in neat sections.  Voila!  No more helmet head.

Tuesday Tip: NEW at-home facial hair removal

Tuesday Tip: NEW at-home facial hair removal

TUESDAY TIP:  I”m so excited to share this one with you!  My FAVORITE hair-removal method for upper lip/chin is the new Twist-N-Roll Tweezer.  It’s basically a spring that you roll across your face that catches and removes unwanted hair.

1) Bend the tool into a u shape

2) Roll it upwards across the spot where you want to remove hair

It’s not entirely painless – but it becomes more painless the more you use it because you’re only removing fine baby hairs.  Because it removes the entire hair, hair does grow back slower and more fine.  Also, unlike waxing, you don’t need to let your hair grow to any length to be able to use it.  I imagine it would be great for people with allergies to waxes.  And you can even use it AFTER  makeup – it doesn’t mess with your foundation. I use it every other day to stay hair free.  You don’t get much precision, so it’s  not for eyebrows where you want a precise shape.  But perfect for upper lip, chin, and facial peach fuzz.  I LOVE THIS TOOL!!

Here’s a short video of me using it:

And it’s available here at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Grace-Harvest-Twist-N-Roll-Tweezers/dp/B001KWEHF6 as well as other places online.

I have no affiliation with this company – I just found out about this tool from a friend of mine from Japan, where this is all the rage.

Tuesday Tip: New Year’s Resolutions

I am addicted to change.  I love making resolutions, and making incremental progress towards making them come true. . .

Here are some of my most recent resolutions for 2012:

  • I resolve to wash my face every night, even if it means that I can’t build multi-day eyelashes by mascara-ing over yesterday’s coat
  • I resolve to put down my iPhone for at least 3 hours a day – only half of which can be sleep time :)
  • I resolve to be planful about my happiness
  • I resolve to never ruin the experience of eating salted caramel ice cream by feeling guilty

What are your favorite resolutions?

2011 What Worked, What Didn’t

2011 What Worked, What Didn’t

Today we kicked off 2011 at Julep with a session on “what worked, what didn’t” in 2011. I think this is important to keep ourselves accountable, to acknowledge what we’re not going to do again, and give ourselves credit for what we’ve figured out. This exercise made me think about “what worked, and what didn’t” for my fashion and beauty routine in 2011.

What worked in 2011:

  • Revitalash! And fiber mascara. I ended the year with eyelashes that are 1.5X longer than 2010.
  • Primer. How did I live 40 years without it? I resisted it for so long because who needs an additional step? Turns out we all do to make makeup all day, looking vibrant.
  • Gel eyeliner. Bold lines, no running, ‘nuff said.
  • Taking care of my cuticles. Using cuticle oil every day and peptide serum at night when my cuticles are ragged has transformed my hands. I now have spring hands, even in the heart of winter.
  • Giving up control. Let a sister, a colleague, a sales associate pick something for you once in a while and try to stay open-minded. • Platforms at least one inch! Height that can last all day long.

What didn’t:

  • Buying clothes thinking that only look good with multiple sets of Spanx.
  • Buttercream soft leather purse. Yummy to look at, but sadly splotchy after just one use.
  • Staying up worrying.

Happy 2012!

Tuesday Tip: Peptides for ragged cuticles and hangnails

This time of year, my hands are always a mess, which is kind of a problem when you run a company called Julep Nail Parlor Company.  People look at my hands A LOT.

The cold dry air combined with the moisture sucked out of your hands by wrapping paper (and Maven box assembly!) are a recipe for hangnails and ragged cuticles galore.

Peptide based lotions or serums are the miracle answer.  I use our Julep Nail Growth Revitalizing Serum for overnight repair.  I rub the serum all over my cuticles, and the next morning I have new hands.  Try any peptide potion and smooth, neat cuticles can be yours the next day.

Tuesday tip: Exfoliate to avoid bumpy skin and in-grown hairs after shaving

Anyone who knows me know that I am addicted to exfoliation, perhaps as a result of my Korean upbringing being scrubbed to squeaky smoothness.  One of my favorite Julep estheticians always tells our parlor guess that exfoliating after waxing and shaving eliminates bumpy skin and ingrown hairs.  And she’s right!  Using a gentle sugar scrub, apricot seed scrub, or better yet, a scrub with BOTH a physical AND chemical exfoliant (like an enzyme or glycolic peel).  You will notice an immediate difference.  I especially love sugar scrubs with hydrating oil, to eliminate dry skin and seal in moisture.   The critical two-step to protect your body from the dryness of winter!

Tuesday Tip: Wear something red

Tuesday Tip: Wear something red

The best thing about December is red.  Not the kind with fuzzy Santas sewn in, but a sexy red cocktail dress.  Or ring.  Or lipstick.

There is a red for every woman, and every woman should try a red this month!

My love of red, and women in red, inspired these two amazing colors:

Try wearing a statement red piece at least one day every week this month – and enjoy ruling the world!

Tuesday Tip: Revitalash + blinc = 2X long lashes

Tuesday Tip:  So do you all know that Revitalash really works to grow your lashes?  I got a free sample at the Oscars last year, and WOW I have eyelashes for the first time in my life.  My Blinc tube mascara adds even more length without any running.  Better than falsies – and longer lashes are the best anti-aging secret there is.  Every extra millimeter somehow fades the other signs of aging.  Give it a try!

Tuesday Tip: Avoiding sheet prints on your manicure

Tuesday Tip: Avoiding sheet prints on your manicure

If  you love changing your nail color in front of a new episode of Happy Endings, there’s just not enough time for your nails to dry fully before hitting the sheets.  Because it’s sad to wake up to a beautiful polish effort ravaged by a night of battling sheets, hair, and other seemingly innocuous, soft looking things that somehow find a way to guage out your polish.

My evening trick is to dunk my fingers in ice water, then protect the polish with cuticle oil before I go to bed.  Sometimes I wait until morning to apply to top coat, so the polish layers are not so thinner and more likely to dry fully.   Also using a shimmer or glitter polish (see previous post) helps.

Tonight I polished my nails in Trina, a color we created in honor of the amazingly talented designer Trina Turk.  I forgot how much I love this aubergine.  I feel like I’m be-jeweled.

Shine on!
